About Akaroa Boat Shed, your Function and Event Centre
The Akaroa Boat Shed was originally built around 1881 for the Akaroa Rowing Club. Unfortunately, the first two sheds were both burned down.
The current wooden structure has occupied its prominent position since 1914, with boat storage downstairs and a dance hall upstairs. It has left an imprint in the collective memory of the town, with a great number of weddings, functions, and parties over the years.
This grand old lady commands superb views across the harbour, although she tends to keep a much more dignified pace, gathering people to Akaroa. Oh, the stories these floorboards could tell!
Your hosts, Lyndal and Darren are regular, down-to-earth people who share a great sense of humour and a passion for their community. Lyndal and Darren have fully embraced this opportunity to put down roots in their adopted home of Akaroa, New Zealand, and to share their passion for it with all their guests.
“If ever a small town deserved the epithet of ‘heavenly’ it is Akaroa. Orchestrated in blues and greens and embosomed in the hills, Akaroa straggles along the water’s edge of an inlet created by the sea flooding the crater of an extinct volcano…
It preserves a high proportion of its historic architecture as though that were the most normal thing in the world… All is calm and quiet in the sun, with flowers.”
